We have baptisms throughout the mission each week. We try to attend the ones that we can. Sometimes our choice seems so random, but we have learned that just about everything that we do has a greater purpose than we had supposed. Since our time here is winding down, we are conciously trying to get to a baptism in each of the chapels where baptisms are held. Hopefully, the investigators and the missionaries will cooperate with us on this. On 12 November 2010, we decided to attend some baptisms in the Thousand Oaks Stake Center that the Spanish elders were having. It was on a Friday instead of a Saturday so we had a better chance of getting there. (Sometimes the baptisms are held at the same time in various locations so that there is no way that we can make it to all of them, thus we pick and choose.) Right after our arrival as we were greeting the guests at the baptism, President Murri found a friend from the past. When President Murri was younger, he served in the Mexican Mission. A brother Parra (now deceased) was in the mission presdency at that time and the then Elder Murri had the opportunity to get to know him quite well. Brother Parra became President of another Mexican mission later on and has been quite well known in Mexican church history. His son, Moroni Parra, serves as the Branch President of the Thousand Oaks 6th Branch and it was he who was hosting the baptism. President Murri was aware of this association due to previous contact with him, but the surprise was that his mother was here visiting from Mexico for the season. Pte Parra was not arround when we met his wife, and then the visiting mother in law. It was fun to make the connection and she was thrilled to find someone who had known her husband and served in her native land. It was even more delightful when President Murri mentioned a Sister who had served in the mission field with him in Mexico. It turned out that this was Hermana Parra's very own sister. It was a sweet acquaintance and nothing casual about it.
